Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Monday that 112 people died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, between Dec. 23 and Dec. 27, pushing the province's death toll past 1,000.

Hinshaw said fewer people were tested for COVID-19 over the holidays, but hospitalization and ICU numbers have not gone down. As of Monday, there were 878 people in hospital, including 148 in intensive care.

In her update on Monday, Hinshaw said one case of the COVID-19 variant identified in the United Kingdom was found in someone who had recently arrived from the U.K., but added the traveller followed all public health measures and no spread has been detected.

She said the U.K. variant of the virus appears to be more infectious and explained what measures Alberta is taking to track and control its potential spread. As of Monday, Hinshaw said Alberta had identified only one case.
