Hurricane Barry barrelled its way through Louisiana but quickly weakened to a tropical storm, bringing torrential downpours and powerful winds which caused widespread flooding and flight cancellations. Barry first made its presence felt in Morgan City, west of New Orleans, but was soon downgraded to a tropical storm with winds decreasing from 70 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. The threat of major flooding from the historically high Mississippi River overtopping levees appeared to have passed, but the storm could still bring dangerous flooding and storm surges to coastal regions southwest of New Orleans and to Baton Rouge and Lafayette due to its 'lopsided' nature and slow speed. Hundreds of residents were forced to wade through waist deep water to evacuate the area, while more than 120 rescue animals were flown from the danger, it was reported.
