Hurricane Julia made landfall in central Nicaragua as a Category 1 storm on October 9. The storm made its way through the country and landed in the Pacific Ocean before slamming Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. The storm, which has since been downgraded to a tropical depression, hit the region with heavy rain and caused at least 28 deaths. El Salvador and Guatemala both declared states of emergency to help storm recovery efforts.

The storm’s remnants continue to cause heavy rains in El Salvador and Guatemala, and the U.S. National Hurricane Center is warning of potential floods and mudslides throughout Central America and southern Mexico on October 10. Climate change is expected to cause hurricanes to become stronger and more vicious as the atmosphere gets warmer, allowing the air to hold more water vapor and rainfall rates to increase.
