In Arizona, there are about 300,000 Native Americans. There is a higher rate of diabetes among Native American adults than any other race or ethnicity. Unfortunately, many Native Americans do not have access to quality medical care.
Diabetes is the leading cause of peripheral artery disease (PAD). The body's ability to heal wounds and fight infection is reduced when a person has PAD or diabetes. The ability to feel the pain of a wound is also reduced. These factors can contribute to worsened wounds, infections, and could possibly lead to infection.
Modern Vascular seeks to end unnecessary amputations in Native Americans. Moderate to severe PAD occurs in Native Americans at a rate which is 1.5 - 2 times that of white people.
Dr. Brannan of Modern Vascular helped found the First Nations Limb Preservation Foundation, and Modern Vascular supports their mission. Their mission is to alleviate the hardship of PAD in the Southwestern Native American community by accepting any patient.
In the past three years, Modern Vascular doctors in Arizona have successfully treated hundreds of Native American patients because of their partnership with the foundation.
