“Ue o Muite Arukou” (by Kyuu Sakamoto) was the original name of the song. It was not only written as a protest song in response to the construction of the US military base on Okinawa, but other societal and economic changes that led the author to believe that his country was changing to the point where it had become unrecognizable. In the lyric the singer talks about “looking up at the sky as it rains so it can hide my tears...” The weekly mass shootings and almost daily killing of a black citizen by police have made this country unrecognizable.
