What was daily life like in the ghetto? How were the harsh living conditions endured? The Lodz ghetto was established on April 30, 1940 in Poland’s second largest city and a major industrial center. Living conditions were grim with overcrowding, no electricity and no water. Disease and starvation were rampant. Intended to be a temporary facility, the ghetto existed for more than four years -- enabling local Nazis to exploit the Jewish labor force. In this lecture, Yad Vashem expert Orit Margaliot will use archival photos and art from the Holocaust to explore the daily struggle for existence in the ghetto.
