San Miguel de Allende has a sizable expat* population and a lot of people wonder--is the influx of foreigners wiping out the Mexican-ness of the city? Are gringos taking over? Is San Miguel still "real Mexico"?
I'm worried about the effects of foreigners in Mexico--but I'm not worried about some of the things I hear complained about most. What I am worried about it gentrification. I'm worried about our presence causing prices to rise to the point where locals can't afford their own city anymore. This seems to have already happened in San Miguel...and I'm very concerned about it happening in Guanajuato too.
* Note about my use of the word "expat." An expat is someone who currently resides in a country other than their country of birth. An immigrant is someone who makes a permanent move to another country. I use expat to describe myself because it fits my situation best; however, there is a racial component to these words, and because I am white, I'm more likely to be called "expat" by other people than "immigrant." A non-white Mexican person living in the United States in my exact circumstance is more likely to be called an "immigrant." Let's keep talking about why that is.
