Learn How to Play Santoor by Kunal Saha on ipassio
The musical instrument is thought to have its origin in Persia, from where it (in its variations) made its way to different parts of the world. It is even mentioned in the ancient Sanskrit texts, where it is referred to as the ‘Shatatantra Veena’ or the ‘hundred stringed instrument’. From being a traditional Sufi folk instrument of Jammu & Kashmir today, it has become essential in Indian Classical Music.
The primary structure of the Santoor is made up of walnut or maple wood. Each string passes over two bridges set over the soundboard. The musical instrument has a range of three octaves. The strings are struck with lightweight mallets to create a beautiful percussive sound.
