"Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?" was a song from the 1932 revue show "Americana", with music by Jay Gorley and lyrics by E. Y. "Yip" Harburg. This December 1932 piano roll (Ampico # 214181) was played by Adam Carroll. The song was recorded by many singers, and was among the most popular songs of 1932 despite its rather brutal lyrics and minor key. And it became effectively the unofficial anthem of the depression era.
The instrument is a large 1928 Mason & Hamlin model RBB 7' grand, the very first fitted with "the new Ampico" or "Ampico B" player system before its commercial introduction in spring of 1929. Both player and piano were recently restored at Historic Pianos. Please visit www.historicpianos.com.
