Teachers, let's face it, have always had it rough. In the classroom, they are expected to solve all of the world's problems.
Teachers are on the front lines of everything that is wrong with our world, and they are paid little and work long hours. Add the chaos of the last two years to a career that is already notoriously challenging. Angry parents, the politics of curriculum with things like critical race theory, masking, vaccination, covid outbreaks, virtual learning, teachers unions. It's a nightmare to work in public education.
Many teachers are resigning, and employers are eager to hire personnel who are used to dealing with everyday obstacles. Consider that for a moment. Wouldn't you want to recruit a former teacher who is happy to have a little peace and quiet and who would most likely always put their best foot forward? And it is this factor that is causing teacher shortages across the country.
Teaching used to be a more appealing profession because the hours mirrored the child's schedule; however, with remote work, you can still raise children while earning money without having to deal with the politics of curriculum testing, behavioral issues, overzealous parents, and politicians legislating what you can and can't teach. It makes perfect sense. But, in the end, it's a major setback for our children.
To recruit new teachers to the field, public education will have to change. Teachers' pay will have to increase, and there will have to be less pressure on them. If this does not happen, teachers will continue to leave school for corporate America, where they will be paid far more and will likely not have to work as hard.
