We are delighted to present the interview series 'My Baroque' with harpsichordist and conductor Trevor Pinnock.
Trevor Pinnock describes at which stage of life J. S. Bach composed the Well-Tempered Clavier. Bach was at a point in his life where he was full of his own conviction, and he felt an urgency to write down what he knew about counterpoint and chromaticism. Bach was obsessed with chromaticism, with the boundaries of tonality, and he was pushing against these boundaries constantly.
Pinnock also emphasizes the effect practicing Bach’s WTC has on the player himself: it sharpens the mind of the interpreter, as the intellectual part of Bach’s work is truly demanding.
Listen to Pinnocks album ‘Well-Tempered Clavier 1’, where he practically demonstrates what is discussed here.
