Wet in wet painting with watercolour is is possibly the technique which the medium is best known for!
It is easy to understand why as the effects, colours and look of the paint it produce are just wonderful, and you really can let the watercolour juts do its thing!
As with all watercolour painting, a little knowledge and a few tricks and tips go along way.
In this quick watercolour bird episode I paint a Bateleur Eagle. It is a great opportunity to look at creating contrast of softer and more flowing wet into wet areas with more refined and sharper detailed areas.
The body and the feathers of the eagle are the perfect place to explore the wet into wet watercolour technique.
Understanding the role of paint consistency os the absolute key to getting to grips with wet into wet painting. We need to first be aware of what level of wetness or dryness the wash on the page is at. Secondly we need to get a feel for the consistency of paint in the brush - how much pigment and how much water.
Understanding the watercolour is so helpful for this. I go deeper into this idea in the video below:
