Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Saturday that the number of cases of COVID-19 had passed 22,500 overall, and the death toll had hit 600.
The news comes as politicians have returned to Ottawa, once again in smaller numbers, to debate the Liberal government's emergency COVID-19 legislation which would allow companies to access a 75 per cent wage subsidy for each employee.
Finance Minister Bill Morneau said on Saturday that the time frame for the payout of the wage subsidy for businesses has been moved up with the hope of occurring within two to five weeks, but are hoping to have the payout be closer to the shorter end of the time. Government House Leader Pablo Rodriguez said all parties had come together to support the bill, but would not say what concessions may have been made to get other parties to support the bill.
