Joseph The Animal Barboza was an East Coast criminal hitman that had made too many enemies to enjoy an extended lifespan. As the walls of his reputation closed tighter, he turned FBI informer. Even with a fresh identity, he returned to crime that included the murder of a Santa Rosa, California man. He served five years in Folsom prison but his identity was now outed. Within four months of release, a contract had been placed on his life.
A man without friends is an easy set-up. On February 11, 1976, he lunched in San Francisco’s Sunset District with an old acquaintance. When he left the meal, a car pulled up. Barboza was armed, but his killer shot first four times. True to his nature, the wounded man shouted obscenities to his killers as they sped away. He collapsed and died on the sidewalk. He’d become just another criminal casualty with no suspects or witnesses. Even his attorney F. Lee Bailey labeled the murder no great loss to society.
