On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. The invasion has likely resulted in tens of thousands of deaths on both sides. It has caused Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II
And now Ukrainians are going to face with first wartime Christmas and figure out how we should celebrate it in the middle of the war.
Unlike America and the vast majority of European countries, Ukraine used to celebrate Christmas on the 6-7th of January (on Julian Calendar)
KYIV — Ukraine’s Orthodox worshippers have changed this tradition for the first time in 2017 allowing its congregations to celebrate on December 25.
And since than December 25 has became a public holiday in Ukraine.
Many of the church’s adherents had lobbied for a move away from the Julian calendar, which is observed by the Russian Orthodox Church.
Me as evangelical Christian (protestant) has been celebrating Christmas on 25th since 2015 (the year I officially repent) my mom celebrates on 7th of January, being Orthodox for many years
In Lviv, Ukraine officially have started celebration on 24th of December and city has been decorated in minimalistic way to save power and energy and celebrate humble in war time.
A lot of people are not feeling Christmas spirit in 2022 due to the mass missile attacks done by Russia and constant power outages - all city Lviv is living in the mode of scheduled rolling blackouts and citizens of Lviv, Ukraine are struggling to proceed with usual daily routine with lack of power.
I have meet @ThatLvivGirl and she told me about her feeling of Christmas during the war in Ukraine and how she is going to celebrate it.
