Beachgoers, on a casual coastal visit, can contribute scientific knowledge. Photos of coastal and marine species taken along the shoreline or at sea provide important data that scientists can analyze across space and time. Collaborators at the California Academy of Sciences, the California Ocean Protection Council, and the California Department of Wildlife are harnessing crowd-sourced observations to illuminate big-picture patterns of how life is fairing throughout the state's network of Marine Protected Areas. Established in 2007, the network manages certain set-aside areas of California waters in order to conserve the many resources these habitats provide. By leveraging the Academy's existing citizen science programs and the iNaturalist platform, which logs detailed species information through community-submitted photos, the team is using tens of thousands of annual coastal observations to build a virtual observatory of marine protected areas. Learn how citizen scientists—and the real-time data they generate—hold the key to monitoring the long-term health of California's coast.
