Some of you might have already heard of the Kola Superdeep Borehole, which is the deepest artificial point on Earth since 1989. This massively deep hole was a result of a drilling project of the Soviet Union in the Pechengsky District, on the Kola Peninsula, hence its name.
During the Cold War era, America was in a Space Race with the U.S.S.R. A very well documented fact. What few know, however, is that a seemingly weird and low-key race was actually also taking place between the greatest drillers of the U.S. and U.S.S.R.
The Kola Superdeep Borehole was the result of this. It became the Soviet Union's stab at exploring the depths of the Earth's crust in the 1970s.
Other similar efforts were made in Guadalupe and Mexico under the name Project Mohole. Later this would be labeled "the Earth Sciences' reply to the space program."
Digging, or rather boring began on the Kola Peninsula, Russia in 1971. Just 8 years later, the project had shattered all other world records for the deepest drilling project by dethroning the Bertha Rogers Hole in Oklahoma, which dipped to a whopping 9,583 meters!
True to the Russian spirit, they kept going. By 1983 they had reached an incredible depth of 12km. As you would have thought, Russian engineers were ecstatic and seemingly decided it would be a great idea to take some time off.
During the break, prominent personalities including scientists and political figures from across the globe made stopovers to the site. Sadly, the site's gear was ultimately left to rot.
Drilling began the subsequent year, it was quickly thwarted by a 5km section of the drill string getting completely sheared off. This meant that they had to start afresh, after abandoning the previous drill string. The project started a new drilling project a 7km depth down the existing hole.
This delayed digging for another 5 years but in 1989, they finally got to their preceding 12km mark Drilling was later stopped due to some serious technical glitches. One of them being temperature. At the drill head, they were in extra of 180 degrees Celsius which, at that time, were too challenging to deal with.
Whereas the team had anticipated reaching 13.5 km by 1990, and 15 km by 1993, they had no option but to stop the task in 1992.
The plan with this project was to attempt to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust, to discover what lies in the great unknown. They do say after all that our knowledge of the galaxies is immense compared to what we know about what lies beneath us.
Most importantly, they just wanted to find out if they could do it. Very Russian if you ask me. Now despite the fact that all that remains of this prestigious achievement are ruins and a soldered shut cover plate.
