How to keep pets warm, safe during winter.
While winter weather can be a cold and unenjoyable season for some humans, it can be a potentially deadly time for stray animals and even household pets.
This season, the Animal Rescue Coalition of Mecosta County is urging residents to pay attention to their animal’s health as freezing weather continues.
Cate Arroe, director of the ARC, said hypothermia and frostbite can be deadly for both strays and even household pets if care is not taken.
“Watching for dropping wind chills, high winds, ice and other winter precipitation is critical for the well-being of our pets,” Arroe said.
“This is true for walking your dog.
If your dog starts picking up his paws, it is too cold for him.
Dogs also get ice and salt in their paws, so it is important to wipe off their feet after a walk.
It is very dangerous to dogs that are tied up outside.
Pets should not be left outside at night when it is this cold."
