(14 Mar 2019) A measure in Italy's 2019 budget law will allow the local government in Venice to charge day-trippers for access to the city's historic centre.
The move is intended as a way to help offset the considerable costs of maintaining a popular tourist destination built on water.
Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said on Thursday the new visitors' tax would allow the city to be cleaned daily and allow Venetians to enjoy a high quality of life.
During a news conference, Brugnaro apologised for the introduction of the levy but said he believes it is necessary for the "world marvel" city.
The city council will be responsible for setting the charge and determining the collection method.
The mayor's office said it would vary from 2.50 euros to 10 euros per person, with exemptions for students and people travelling briefly to Venice for work or business and regional residents.
The new levy will not reply to overnight visitors.
Tourists are currently charged a small "stay" tax per night that varies according to such criteria as season, location, and guests' ages.
