I went completely crazy for Patrice the first time "Haven't You Heard" played at the club....that piano driven jazz funk classic rocked! Those drums were properly miked and when it played it was hot! I ran out and bought "Pizzazz" and loved every track on it, I played it thru so many times I had to replace it twice since then.
A few years later after the disco fun died down, I heard this loping funk tune on the radio and the synth pattern caught my ear along with the handclaps of the gods and I was hooked! The song was "Forget Me Nots" and the artist was Patrice Rushen! That one became an R&B classic based on the number of artists who co-opted the song into their hits like George Michael and Will Smith and currently has 47 instances of legal use. I spent that spring and summer hearing that song once or twice a day on the radio and loved the hell out of it.
Then I took a car trip in summer of 1991 where I flew to Vancouver, BC with my friend Allen and rented a car that took us all the way down to San Diego and back again putting nearly 3000 miles on it. We stopped in LA and got an street invitation by a studio to see the taping of a nighttime talk show that turned out to be "Into The Night", but this was before they pegged Rick Dees as a host and it was handled by two personalities I can't remember. I do remember being one row away from the stage right band setup and there was, ahem PATRICE RUSHEN! I almost peed myself....this mystery voyage to the taping turned out to be a spectacular event. She is so tiny! They did not go with Patrice either. I suspect that it was the very first trial of the show and they changed it completely.
Patricia Louise Rushen was born September 30, 1954 in Los Angeles, CA to Allen and Ruth Rushen. The oldest of two daughters, she learned how to play piano by the age of three giving recitals by the age of six. She later attended and graduated both high school and the University Of Southern California.
She won a competition that enabled her band to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival and was signed to Prestige Records, releasing three albums. In 1978, she moved to Elektra Records with her 1982 album "Straight From The Heart" went straight to the charts with the single "Forget Me Nots".
Some time ago I was asked to remix Patrice's "Remind Me" another track on the same album and for the life of me could not figure out how to arrange this gem until this evening after having listened to the original about 100 times. I hope you enjoy this one, I know I do!
