Some dogs react to touch on specific body parts with growling, snapping and biting. This video shows how to use counterconditioning and systematic desensitization to change the dog's conditioned emotional response to a specific touch he finds threatening. After the procedure is complete, instead of feeling threatened and responding with aggressive behavior, he will calmly accept/mildly anticipate being touched in the sensitive area.
This video uses a demo dog who is not touch sensitive. It describes the process and how to determine if the dog is comfortable with the rate of progression.
The goal is to keep the dog comfortable throughout the entire process, never feeling threatened. If the dog is still, mouth is always closed, behavior seems suppressed, is reluctant to take food,, yawns, flicks his tongue, or shows any other signs of discomfort or stress, you're going to quickly. If the dog response with aggressive behavior (freezes, low growl, snap, bite), start the process over and go more slowly.
When done correctly, the process is repetitive and boring.
