“It is nearly impossible to avoid disposable plastic in the majority of our current world. That’s what I hope my work and open data can help to change—so communities can choose what is best for their context, making the power of choice inclusive and accessible to all.” – Jenna Jambeck, Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering and 2022 MacArthur Fellow.
Each year, over 12 million tons of plastics enter the ocean. That’s more than a dump truck of plastics every minute. Plastic pollution affects our waterways, food supply, and planet’s health.
UGA professor Jenna Jambeck, an environmental engineer, is tackling this global challenge. She’s helped measure the scale of the problem, and she’s leading efforts to empower communities to address plastic waste locally. Because of her work, Jambeck was named a 2022 MacArthur Fellow.
