Could there possibly be a more WORLD-WEARY rendition of "Sophisticated Lady" than what we're watching here? Tammy Grimes performs this classic as if it were a theater piece rather than just a song. Actually, several of the Ellington and/or Strayhorn compositions lend themselves to that type of treatment; the melody, harmony and lyrics combine to formulate a dramatic vignette. (For example, "Lush Life", "Something To Live For", "Prelude To A Kiss"... there are many.)

The face that appears and then fades at the beginning of the clip is that of Mercer Ellington, Duke's son who took over as bandleader upon his father's passing.

This video clip is from a tribute to Ellington that was broadcast on television in 1984. It's another discovery from the dusty crates at YouTube channel TheMotionDevotion, in this case a Betamax videocassette.
