Shrinkage is something that all retailers face.

Even the most seasoned small business owners will encounter shoplifting, employee theft, and inventory loss for reasons out of their control.

In this video, we’ll discuss ways that employees may be stealing from your small business and how to handle them.

Did you know that 75 percent of employees admit to stealing from their employer at least once?

The thing is, this doesn’t only mean swiping products from your shelves or back room.

Employees can steal from your business in several ways, such as:
Abusing their employee discount…
Not scanning all of the items when ringing up a friend or family member…
Processing fake returns…
Taking longer breaks — or asking a coworker to clock them in when they aren’t working…
And sneaking money from the cash drawer.

Some of these actions may not seem like a huge deal to someone who has never worked retail.

They may not even KNOW they’re stealing!

So, when onboarding new employees, address shrinkage early on and make your team aware of the impact it has on the business.

If you become suspicious of an employee but haven’t seen anything happen, we don’t recommend firing them immediately.

Instead, if you think someone has been stealing, you can place them on suspension while you investigate the situation.

To avoid issues for your small business, it’s only recommended to fire someone on your team if you have solid proof that they’ve stolen.

Let your team know that, if they are caught stealing, they will be terminated.

Whether they were stealing items themselves, or helping friends get away with theft, you have the right to take action against them.
