CAN FINASTERIDE ON ITS OWN MAINTAIN MINOXIDIL GAINS?
A question that pops up a lot in the comments.
If I don’t want to use minoxidil anymore, can I switch to finasteride and keep my new hair?
Or, if I’m on a combination treatment, minoxidil plus finasteride, what happens if I drop the minoxidil?
Unfortunately, in both cases, finasteride on its own won’t be enough.
All the hair you’ve grown out from the minoxidil will fall back out.
The reason is that minoxidil and finasteride have completely different mechanism of action.
We don’t know exactly how minoxidil regrows hair. But we know it has nothing to do with DHT.
So whether you’re on finasteride or not will make no difference.
Which brings up a very good question: is there anything can you switch to after minoxidil that will allow you to keep your minoxidil gains?
Unfortunately, we have no published data on this whatsoever.
If you have any personal experience with this, or if you have any ideas, we’d love to hear them in the comments.
