75 years ago,on the 1st of September Germany invaded Poland and by the 3rd of September, England because of her treaty with Poland, declared war on Germany. This meant that T&T was at war. Calypsonians of the day have chronicled a vivid account of the events that unfolded before them. A couple of these songs can even be considered prophetic, as they foresaw back in 1939/40 that the USA would enter the war on the side of the British and that Nazi Germany would eventually lose. Victory over Germany was not that obvious to Britain back in 1940.
As true calypsonians they have reported the happenings in a skillful and poetic style. I would like you to pay attention to their choice of words. These calypsos provide us with insight to the turbulent times that they lived in.
Between 1942 and 1946 as many as 150000 US soldiers were stationed in Trinidad. The island's total population at the time was approximately 450000 of which ca.100000 were children. This US military presence had a profound impact on Trinidad society, economy, infrastructure and definitely on the entire business of calypso.
In 2013 the Holocaust museum in Florida, featured several Calypsonians and their WW2 songs. Here is their link: [ Ссылка ]
