Following the end of his sliding pliers patent, Gerber, with his Center-Drive, answered Leatherman who took the opportunity to release the OHT, his first multi-tool based on this principle.
Center-Drive does not seem to me a very brilliant answer to the OHT for the following reasons:
- no saw,
- a file with two faces (what a blunder!),
- no can opener,
- doubtful ergonomics (exit from the pliers, deployment of secondary tools),
- brittle carbide inserts (tested on Ø 2.4 mm nails),
- mediocre serrated blade (what a blunder!).
Certainly, to his credit, it is necessary to put:
- a long knife blade,
- A bit adapter centered for easy screwing and associated with a kit of bits housed in a two-pocket sheath,
- pry bar & nail puller and a awl (a belt cutter, a can opener and an oxygen tank wrench for the OHT).
If the Center-Drive can compete with the OHT, mainly thanks to its bit kit and adapter, and its knife blade, it can not worry the Surge: for example and in particular, the length of the Center-Drive bit holder can be a handicap that the Surge does not suffer, the extension bit driver of which remains an accessory and is also equipped with a kit of bits.
Note that the OHT is unable to cut small electrical wires (what a blunder!).
Suite à la fin d'activité de son brevet de pince coulissante, Gerber, avec son Center-Drive, répondit à Leatherman qui en avait profité pour sortir l'OHT, son premier multi-tool basé sur ce principe.
Le Center-Drive ne me semble pas une réponse très brillante à l'OHT et ce pour les raisons suivantes :
- pas de scie,
- une lime à deux faces (quelle bourde !),
- pas d'ouvre-boîte,
- ergonomie douteuse (sortie de pince, déploiement des outils secondaires),
- plaquettes en carbure cassantes (testé sur des clous Ø 2.4 mm),
- lame crantée médiocre (quelle bourde !).
Certes, à son actif, il faut mettre :
- une longue lame de couteau,
- un porte-embout centré pour faciliter le tournevisage et associé à un kit d'embouts logé dans une housse à deux poches,
- un déclouteur faisant aussi office de pied de biche et un poinçon (un coupe-ceinture, un ouvre-boîte et une clé pour bouteille d’oxygène pour l'OHT).
Si le Center-Drive peut rivaliser avec l'OHT, et ce essentiellement grâce à son kit d'embouts et son adaptateur, et à sa lame de couteau, il ne parvient pas à inquiéter le Surge : par exemple et notamment, la longueur du porte-embout du Center-Drive peut être un handicap dont ne souffre pas le Surge dont le prolongateur reste un accessoire et qui est aussi doté d'un kit d'embouts.
A noter que l'OHT ne parvient pas à couper des petits fils électriques (quelle bourde !).
