Obviously, the big news from yesterday (as of the date of this posting) is dissecting what happened in Butler, Pennsylvania - as the timeline of the United States was inches away from being completely different.
As the partisan divide has grown wider, there's been an intersecting of sorts within the Roman Catholic Church - especially in regards to Traditional Latin Mass.
In 1958, Gallup polls listed Catholic regular attendance at an all-time high of 75%. In 1962, Pope John XXIII surprised those those who expected him to be a caretaker pope by calling the historic Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). He died within months of convoking it, but it launched a series of updates to better connect with an increasingly secular world. The biggest change was the performance of Mass, where the native language could be authorized in addition to Latin.
Well since Vatican II, Catholic regular attendance has continually declined over the past 60 years. Pew Research came out with a detailed report this past April, showing regular attendance now stands at 28%.
To further complicate matters, in July 2021, Pope Francis issued sweeping restrictions on Latin Mass - requiring Vatican permission.
Yet, the few parishes that continue Latin Mass are reporting increased attendance. Since opening in 2018, St. Vitus in San Fernando (with a 93% Hispanic population in the heart of LA) has already quadrupled attendance - requiring every inch of land to house its congregation.
As a result, many are seeing the restrictions on Latin Mass as a REJECTION of the progressive movement towards modern Mass. And after seeing Pew Research's political polling, the favorability of Pope Francis has PLUNGED among Catholic conservatives (going from 84% in 2013 to 63% in 2024). Meanwhile, Democrat favorability for Pope Francis has increased to 89% - showing a big political rift.
This and much more - like a brief history of the Spanish Missions and how a woman named Mrs. A.S.C. Forbes preserved this part of California history with planting mission bells along El Camino Real - can be found in this week's video.
