Hi! This is Jen with the CofC Career Center here to walk you through how to navigate the job search filters in Handshake, our online job board, so that you may find the types of positions you seek.
When you first login to your Handshake account, this is the view of your page. You may search for Jobs by either using the Jobs’ tab here at the top or along the middle navigation bar.
Let’s review the job search options.
First you may search by titles, employers, or key words, as well as location.
These key words have been used in prior searches and thus why they appear here.
You may search full-time jobs, part-time, internship, on-campus, as well as additional filters by clicking on the drop-down arrow.
These are all the different types of jobs within Handshake that you may search. And you may search them according to paid roles, work study, and anybody that is also holding interviews on campus.
You may search the employer preferences in terms of how they match against your profile. You may search work authorization, industry, job function, and major. You’ll also note that there are suggestions below each of these fields and these are based on prior searches. You may also search for specific employers.
And finally, you can search this “Labeled by Your School” field. As the Career Center vets jobs within Handshake, we label them if they are camps, if they are located in downtown Charleston, if they require 1-3 years of experience or a special skill set, and if they are on campus jobs that require federal work study, or if they are summer jobs.
And over here on the bottom right, you will see that there are 2,600 jobs currently posted in Handshake. Click here to see all of these jobs.
Over here at the right by the yellow star are “My Favorite Jobs”. As I search for jobs in the system, I can flag them so that I can find them more easily later here.
I’m interested in an internship which now reduces the number of postings that I can search through to 504. But this is still a lot of jobs to search through. So I’m going to narrow my search by indicating the location that I need to be in which is Charlotte, North Carolina. I’ve now reduced the options to 25. This is a bit more reasonable to research. I can scroll through here to find jobs and internships of interest or I can add in an extra parameter to search. I’m going to look for marketing internships in Charlotte. Now this has reduced the selections to 13. I can scroll through here and find an opportunity of interest. I’m going to look at the Product Management internship. It will pop-up over here on the right and I can click on the title so that it opens in a brand new window.
Here I can find some quick information, including that it’s a full-time internship and that it’s paid. I can see when the application closes and I can click on the “apply externally” to apply when I’m ready. I will need to attach my resume and my cover letter for this one and then once I’ve done that, it will lead me to this external application which is usually the website of the organization.
I can read the description and “see more” if I need more information. I can look at how closely my profile aligns with the employer’s preferences. I can see reviews by other students who have worked for this organization and these can be students from the College of Charleston as well as other universities that use Handshake. I can also see how strong my profile is and it is clearly very weak right now. So I need to go into my settings and update my profile as soon as possible so I can be more marketable to employers.
I can look at contact information that the employer may have provided, see similar jobs within Handshake, learn more about the organization, and I can see students who may have worked here in the past. Again these could be College of Charleston students or students from other universities. And if I want to connect with them, I need to go to my Settings and Privacy tab and join what’s called the Community.
I hope this helps make your search a little bit simpler in using Handshake.
Happy Hunting!
