It was a massacre of innocent indigenous people from one of the world’s most repressive regimes, and the world never heard about it. On February 22, 50 Venezuelan soldiers opened fire on the Kumarakapay community.
In Venezuela, people are suffering from malnutrition and lack of medical attention - in what was once the richest country in the region. Nearly 4 million have fled to safety in neighboring countries. When members of the international community announced they would bring food and supplies to villages, Maduro sent the military to block the aid - leading to violent repressions. The latest in a regime marked by government oppression and brutality.
On March 31, President Kerry Kennedy, Advocacy & Litigation Program Director Angelita Baeyens, and our partner Foro Penal led a joint delegation to the border between Brazil & Venezuela. During the visit, the delegation interviewed survivors of the massacres, who relayed accounts of the horrifying violence and cruelty carried out by the military. Currently no soldiers are facing any criminal charges or disciplinary action.
