The slaughter of the Polish population lasted more than a year. Individual assaults began as early as 1942, and the machinery of the crime started at the beginning of 1943. The apogee fell on July 11 - referred to as Bloody Sunday. The murders in Volhynia did not end until the first quarter of 1944. From mid-1943, the massacres moved to the southern provinces of the Second Republic: Stanislawow, Ternopil and Lwow.

In June 1943, the commander of one of the UPA's groups issued a directive to liquidate the Polish population. "We should carry out a great action to liquidate the Polish element. With the departure of the German troops, we should use this convenient moment to liquidate the entire male population. This battle we cannot lose. Polish forces must be weakened at any cost. The villages should disappear from the surface."

The reality turned out to be even worse. - The directive was preceded by at least five months of slaughter. On the basis of what orders did the earlier crimes take place? They must have existed, although they have not survived. Most likely, the main order issued at the UPA's organizational summit was not in writing.
