(12 Oct 2020) Clashes erupted in Santiago Monday following an unauthorized march in support of Chile's largest Indigenous group.
The march is part of the "Encuentro de dos Mundos" or "Meeting of Two Worlds" event held yearly.
It is also an event in which the Mapuche resistance, which, among other things, aims to bring attention to their plight and reiterate their claims to recover ancestral lands.
The demonstration coincided with the observance of Columbus Day in the Americas, in recognition of Christopher Columbus who, for a long time, was presented as the "discoverer" of the Americas.
Columbus is today associated in many minds with the abuses committed by Europeans against Indigenous groups, including those in Chile.
The demonstration began as a peaceful march in Chile's capital, with groups of native peoples marching along the main avenue of Santiago, Alameda Bernardo O'Higgins.
As the march was not authorized, police attempted to stop participants from advancing.
This led to a group of protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs at police, who in turn attempted to disperse the crowd by using water cannons.
Some bus stops and signal lights were damaged during the melee.
Carabineros eventually dispersed the marchers with tear gas and water cannon trucks.
