In the meantime, we are warming up with these short daily practices. Every day, we focus on one essential element of your gait pattern.
Today's video is all about the turning of the pelvis. Ideally, the pelvis makes a smooth 3-4 degrees of rotation to the right and a symmetrical movement to the left. The size of the rotation will vary depending on the speed of walking. Also, the movements of the pelvis may be emphasized or diminished when the other joints' range of motion is compromised, including foot and ankle, knee, hip, sacroiliac joints, and the articulations of the spine.
First, pay attention to the natural motion of your pelvis to the right and left while walking. Does it turn symmetrically? Or do you keep it fairly motionless?
Then, practice increasing the rotational movements. Perform the movements within a simple and easy range. Avoid any strain.
Next, intentionally diminish twisting movements of the pelvis. Take a note of how it feels.
Finish by walking and allowing spontaneous movements. Learn how practicing different variations (more movement, less movement) helps to restore more natural and elegant motion.
