a summary of this retelling:
A child is ordained as the new High Priestess to the ancient dark Powers of the Earth, and she alone may enter their domain: the pitch-black labyrinth of the Tombs of Atuan where light is forbidden. Despite her mastery of her domain, she struggles with her duty to enact her masters' violent will when a wizard from beyond the sea comes to take back the Tomb's greatest treasure, half of the Ring of Erreth-Akbe, a symbol of peace in Earthsea and long lost artifact. The wizard opens her eyes to the world beyond the labyrinth that has been her home - and her prison - for almost as long as she can remember.
