This holiday season, Earth Rangers and the Wildlife Conservation Society are launching an exciting new project to protect one of Canada's most iconic species, the Woodland caribou.
The Woodland caribou once roamed as far south as North Bay, Ontario but over the past century their range has shrunk to the northern half of Ontario. Today, natural resource exploration, climate change and forestry are changing the north, leading to the degradation of the caribou's habitat.
To protect the Woodland caribou, further research is needed to better understand how changes in land usage affect their population. You can help by supporting Earth Rangers and the Wildlife Conservation Society's efforts to send scientists into the field to monitor caribou herds. The information collected by radio-collared female caribous and visual monitoring through flyovers will help inform better land usage and habitat protection policies.
