SS23 marks the return of BARRAGÁN to New York City, a post-covid critique of American BACK TO BUSINESS
culture, including its entrenched culture of whiteness. This is Victor Barragán’s first show in NYC since September
2019, then part of the CFDA Fashion Fund. As an artist, student of architecture and fashion designer supported by
friends and community, Victor Barragán asks, What has changed?
BARRAGÁN first sets the stage as a classic American music festival - utopia gone dystopic real fast. Within a
scene of toxic toilets and barricades: enter 26 looks worn by stock American characters cast by a designer
constantly negotiating the cultural border between CDMX and NYC.
The native vocabulary in this cultural zone is Spanglish; forming an aesthetic that cannot be clearly classified as
American or Mexican. And right now, there’s the urge to burn everything to the ground and see what light’s left.
Enter groups of fùtbol jerseys and zip-away sport shorts inspired by gear that teen Victor inherited from siblings
in CDMX. Not to be worn for actual sport - but fantasy sports, including listening to American rap metal. And the
sport of hypermasculinity.
Enter the “business man” cotton shirting slashed away at the sleeves, cut down for today, worn with clownish
neckties and obsolete briefcases filled with empty air. Perfect for an empty Wall Street.
Enter comically “American” prints: Dollar bill$, $tars and $tripes, Hunting Camo, Gun$ and God, proudly loud
and large for American patriots to wear at any cultural carnival with the goal to be cancelled, twice, for bad behavior.
America’s finest Shredded denim enters the show, eaten up and spit out in the hands of BARRAGÁN.
Here’s your patriotism, served up by BARRAGÁN.
