Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe - November 10, 2020 - Anthony’s Cari-Jazz Artiste of the Day
We don’t have much information on this track except that it features the usual excellent playing of Len ‘Boogsie’ Sharpe and was recorded 1986 at Coral Sounds Studios in Trinidad and released on the Charlie’s Records label. However, there are several excellent attributes that I would like to bring to your attention.
This song is considered an “Indian Parang” song. If Parang is described loosely as a genre of music with Spanish-influenced lyrics and rhythms that is popular in Trinidad and Tobago and generally played during the Christmas season, then “Indian Parang” would then be the aforementioned blend of cultures with the addition of East Indian-type melodies and instruments.
In addition to the East Indian melody line and the drummers, (this track features the East Indian drumming of Anthony Ramesar on tabla, and Sham Guiness on Dholak/Tabla), this song also features the playing of violin virtuoso, Anselm Walters. (Yes, I said violinist. You don’t hear a violin? Listen again.) Anselm Walters has been playing violin since he was 6 years old. He was initially taught by his father Esmond Walters, who is the founder of the Walters School of Music.
This song is the Side B instrumental version to the Side A which has the original song, “Indian Parang” by Dhanmatie Kissoondath and Kenny “Sharma” Joseph (Kenny J). Side A also has a song with Daisy Voisin and Hazel Ramberansingh entitled “We Jam” and Daisy ‘chants’ what is called a ‘Parang Rapso’ during the song. (Amazing the things you discover!) Both songs are featured on Side B as instrumentals. That’s where “Boogsie and Anslem come into the picture. (Have you heard the violin yet?)
Also being featured on Side B are flautist Curtis Lewis and bassist Ron Reid, who is also listed as the arranger and producer. Of notable mention are the appearances of Leroy Birch on cuatro, and Terry Shaw on guitar. Leroy, Curtis and pianist Donald Jananan, who is the co-writer of the song with D. Ramsingh, play an excellent supporting role and funky soca jam towards the middle of the song.
