The Circular Economy Action Plan, adopted by the European Commission in 2020, is one of the cornerstones of the European Green Deal. The plan includes a series of measures to ensure that the resources used in the EU are kept in use for as long as possible. The final goal is to transform consumption patterns, making sustainable products, services and businesses models the norm in the European Union, while minimising waste production.
A circular city is one that promotes the transition from a linear to a circular economy and does it in a holistic way, by integrating all actors - from citizens, to business and the research community.
In CityLoops, seven small to medium-sized European cities, together with a set of multidisciplinary partners, are working together to become more circular.
Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme, CityLoops is one of a series of initiatives demonstrating how cities can become centres of circular innovation. The cities of Apeldoorn, Bodo, Hoje-Taastrup, Mikkeli, Porto, Roskilde and Seville are developing and testing a series of processes and tools to tackle biowaste and construction and demolition waste.
