Gagosian Recruits an All-Star Board of Directors, Hinting to Its Prosperity in the Future
The founder of one of the largest art galleries in the world, Larry Gagosian, revealed on Wednesday that he convened his first annual meeting of shareholders in May and had already formed a board of directors. According to the news release, the board includes professionals from the film and television industry as well as the fields of real estate and technology. The gallery will benefit from their "strategic perspective and direction," according to the press statement.
As the current executive vice president of Louis Vuitton and a member of both LVMH's board of directors and executive committee, Delphine Arnault is the most well-known member of the group, at least among those who frequently consume content about the arts in print. The art world has been abuzz all year with speculation that LVMH may acquire the mega-gallery. Gagosian has disputed these claims, saying they are only gossip.
The Canvas, an art industry newsletter, had a second concept. A report said that LVMH may have extended the gallery a $1 billion line of credit to enable it bid on high-priced artwork at auction. Director Sofia Coppola and William Bell Jr., who runs Bell-Phillip Television Productions and owns the rights to the long-running soap opera The Young and the Restless, will serve on the board.
Francesco Bonami, the curator of the 2003 Venice Biennale, and artist Jenny Saville will both serve on the board as representatives of their respective fields. Additionally, seven of Larry Gagosian's employees will be there. (You can find Saville on the roster of featured artists at Gagosian.) Members include professionals from the fields of technology and business, such as Snapchat CEO and co-founder Evan Spiegel and Monaco-based investor Laurent Asscher.
In addition to Valentino Carlotti and Matthew S. Dontzin, the group also includes Glenn Fuhrman, J. Tomilson Hill, and Dasha Zhukova Niarchos.
He stated, "My goal in putting together a Board of Directors was to lift the bar on the gallery's strategic thinking and long-term vision," in a press statement issued by Larry Gagosian.
Now that Gagosian has reached the ripe old age of 77, speculation has begun regarding what will become of the gallery after he departs. Nothing explicit about these plans was reported on Wednesday, but the identities of the board members have already sparked speculation. Andrew Fabricant, a member of the board, assumed the role of chief operational officer in 2019. This was interpreted by many as a sign of his future importance to the gallery.
