The Tano River in West Africa has been a lifeline for wildlife and people for centuries. But in recent years, its clear waters have turned a murky brown, with little sign of life.

Samples taken in the town of Elubo found its turbidity — a measure of suspended material in water — was more than 100 times higher than the accepted standard for drinking water.

The pollution in the Tano River comes mainly from irresponsible mining. Akonta Mining Limited is one of the main polluters. Its site appears to violate mining regulations, which require a 50-meter buffer zone from the nearest body of water, like the Tano River. An investigative team discovered mining taking place directly on the riverbed at four key pollution points along the river.

Ghana’s government says it’s renewing its fight against irresponsible mining.
