What does it mean if your TSH is normal but your free T4 is low and you have the symptoms of hypothyroidism? The crux of this question is really: How accurate is the TSH thyroid lab test? The answer is that it can be helpful but it is far from perfect. In a situation like this, here’s a couple of good next steps: The first is to get your thyroid antibodies tested. The reason is that early stage Hashimoto’s can cause a change in your free thyroid hormone levels before your TSH is impacted. If these tests are positive then you may have your answer. The next thing to do is get your reverse T3 evaluated. If your reverse T3 is elevated then it may be that your thyroid is being impacted by something like stress and you may not even need treatment for it. Yes, your thyroid may have an issue but that doesn’t always mean that you need thyroid medication. The bottom line?
