The Barbary Wars: America’s First War on Terror
Sometimes it seems not much changes through history. If I were to tell you that off the coast of a foreign land somewhere radical Islamists were capturing boats killing, converting and enslaving American citizens and demanding that the United States pay a tax for the pirates to stop attacking in the future. One wonders what might happen about it today, would there be secret pallets of cash sent to placate the jihadists or would there be a series of top secret drone strikes or a surgical action by some highly trained elite military force? Who knows. However, this is the story of what Thomas Jefferson and the United States Marine Corps did about it in 1801.
