Originally a stand-alone work composed in 1996, Emma Lou Diemer included the Serenade/Toccata as part of her Piano Sonata No. 3 in 1999. This music flows between bursts of energy and moments of serenity. It is an unusual mixture of what sounds like John Adams' Hallelujah Junction and the jazzy etudes of Nikolai Kapustin. And it works out to be something quite fresh!
