On October 6, 1924, tenor John McCormack performed in a concert at The Queen's Hall in London. It was a triumphant return for the tenor as he had not performed in Great Britain for nearly 10 years. The reason for his absence was political because during the First World War, John McCormack became a citizen of the the United States. His adoring British fans felt he had betrayed them and for those ten years, John McCormack was unable to perform anywhere in the United Kingdom, including Australia. But by 1924 all was forgiven and John McCormack was welcomed back enthusiastically.
What is presented here is a re-creation of the actual concert. Unfortunately, a few of the songs from the original program were never recorded by McCormack, so I hopefully chose suitable substitutes. Also not included in this recreation are the musical pieces pianist Henri Deering played at the beginning and between the sets during the program. Unavailable was a list of any of the encores that McCormack most assuredly had given so I took the liberty of choosing one. Here is a listing of the songs you will hear:
Caro Amore by George Frederic Handel
O Sleep, Why Dost Thou Leave Me? by Handel
Come, My Beloved by Handel
Die Liebe hat gelogen by Franz Schubert
Der Jungling an der Quelle by Schubert
