The Commission also warned Italy if it does not go through with their project, Brussels could demand an eye-watering 810million euros from Rome in money already spent on the link. Referring to the grants, a European Commission spokesman said: “The commission cannot exclude that it may have to request Italy to repay.” The anti-establishment 5-Star Movement has long opposed the plan for the train connection, known as TAV, to link the Italian city of Turin to Lyon in France having rubbished the investment as a waste of cash.
