After failure to procure the XM247 Sergeant York SHORAD (Short Range Air Defense) vehicle, the United States military began looking for a new system to protect its heavy armor units from fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. The ADATS (Air Defense Anti-Tank System) was already in use with the Canadian military, so it looked like a very attractive option. Mounted on the chassis of the Bradley fighting vehicle, the US ADATS had excellent performance during testing. Unfortunately, issues with cost and unreliability meant that the US ADATS was never procured.
