ALL SPICE
Origin:
All spice is native to West Indies, Mexico and central America. They can be grown in warmer and tropical climates around the world.
Weather:
In India it adapted itself very well and grows superbly, especially in south India. But if you live in colder areas, you need to move this plant indoor when the temperature is below 10°c. Plant all spice in pots for better handling during those worse weather conditions. Place the plant in a position where it can get 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight.
Choice of Pot:
This is actually a tree but can be grown in a growbag. I bought this from a nursery as a small sapling and planted it in a growbag. Since then I didn't need to change the pot. You can grow this in any pot or container. They aren't so picky about beautiful pots or containers. A growbag with some drain holes is just fine for all spice.
Potting Soil Recipe:
All spice can tolerate wide range of soil types. So dont worry if you're planting them in ground. But for pots its different. I used a well draining potting mix made with garden soil, compost and sand in 5:3:2 ratio. Water it regularly cause this plant cant tolerate drought. Keep flooding them whenever the potting soil is dry.
Fertilizer:
This plant isn't very demanding like other plants. However I fertilize my plant regularly with kitchen waste compost and a liquid organic fertilizer made with 1 tbsp of both mustard cake and neem cake powder. Use this feed for your plant at 15 days interval and you'll see amazing result.
All Spice Uses:
• Actually this a spice plant, that means we can use it in our kitchen as we use curry leaf or bay leaf.
• Curries, stews, chutneys and pickles prepared with this gain more aromatic flavour thats popular too.
• Beside these culinery use, there's a more interesting thing you should know. This plant is really rich in medicinal properties. Medical researchers have found that it has the same properties present in clove. It's very beneficial for arthritic pain and many other muscle pains. Also all spice is known to settle nervous system and can be helpfull for stress related symptoms.
