Skyrim stores the models for the game inside of a nif file. In order to open nif files and make adjustments to the asset we will need to have Nifskope installed. Nifskope will allow us to open the nif files and make minor adjustments for prepping an asset prior to inserting it into the game. Certain settings will always need to be adjusted after having imported and exported a model from 3ds Max 2012 such as texture assignments and shader properties. Nifskope is not what we will be using to import the models into 3ds Max 2012 but it is still an essential tool to have for modding Skyrim. You could consider Nifskope to be a required application for modding Skyrim models.
In order to import and export game models from Skyrim, you will need to download and install Niftools by figment. The installation of Niftools is covered in much more depth during video five of the series. Niftools works like a plugin for 3ds Max 2012 and even comes with its very own pop up import options and export options directly inside of 3ds Max 2012. Niftools could also be considered a required application for modding Skyrim assets if you only intend to do your importing and exporting from 3ds Max 2012. During these videos you will see version 372 being used. Each version of Niftools seems to have its own upsides and downsides so you can choose to use the same version as is being used in these videos or opt to use version 373. The choice is yours.
We will also be taking a look at how to install a custom body so that we can develop armors for it. Using a custom body is recommended as custom bodies typically do not have a division in the torso section. The vanilla body types are split into two pieces and that is not exactly ideal for learning.
