Hi there I'm Beau Young 2 x world champion longboarder, I'm here to teach you some advanced paddle techniques!
Before we begin there are two things I want you to pay particular attention to, the first being your body position and second your stroke technique, so with this in mind let's begin.
When paddling we slightly separate our fingers in order to gain more power with each stroke, your arm will typically be submerged almost as far as the elbow your paddle should be a consistent sweeping motion from the top of your stroke arcing under your board towards the fins and back out on exit, keeping a steady speed and pace is the ultimate goal to paddling. Your body positioning should be straight with your ankles together as this will give you greater stability and additional power your back should be slightly arched with your glutes engaged and your gaze level towards the horizon. This technique will reduce back pain and provide long term results, before paddling for your wave you can perform a paddle boost to increase forward thrust this is achieved by sitting on the mid section of your board leaning back and holding your board's rails, start by pushing down with your arms submerging the tail of your board the board will then pop up and outwards creating forward momentum a quick kick underneath the water surface and the thrust from the board will ensure you start your paddle with greater speed additionally performing a variety of exercises to increase your stamina and provide you with increased power through your strokes.
This concludes today's tutorial so tune in for our next episode with more helpful tips and tricks
