Nick Scholten’s Don’t Worry, composed in 2020 in a spirit of seeking hope during times of struggle. The piece veers from the sunny opening atmosphere into a maelstrom of tension and frustration before being soothed into resolution, ultimately returning to the opening mood of optimism. Scholten intended the work to be an exploration of the different qualities of the pedal harp, enhanced by his first foray into electronic techniques, which are used sparingly to enhance certain timbres.
Nick Scholten is one of the leading concert harpists in the Netherlands. Characteristic of his playing and repertoire is his interest in many different music genres, from contemporary classical music, jazz and film music to writing his own work.
He is the regular harpist with a number of new orchestras, including the Noordpool Orkest and the Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht. He is invited to join major orchestras in the Netherlands and orchestras abroad, such as the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, De Nationale Opera, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, the Hessische Rundfunk Frankfurt and the North Netherlands Orchestra. He twice won first prize in the harp audition training at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, after which he also played with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
In his own solo recitals he plays music from the regular harp repertoire, combined with lesser known works and his self-written compositions. He has been playing in the Duo Spinoza for 10 years now, with violinist Samuel Tamarit Otero. Together they discovered the sensitive and temperamental repertoire for the two stringed instruments, which lend themselves so well to intense ensemble playing and a smaller concert hall.
